Houdini

Swaddled Hudson

Ever since Hudson's birth, we've been swaddling him at bedtime. The hospital uses this method and it's pretty common practice these days. Babies under 3-4 months of age have a 'moro reflex' which means they basically constantly wake themselves up by jerking their hands/arms/legs. We've seen Hudson do this a zillion times during unswaddled naps and it looks as if he is trying to direct planes onto a runway his arms are flailing so much. We even double swaddle him, with 2 blankets in effort to keep him mellow and cozy in his sleep.

But, he is getting older and stronger and while he sleeps so soundly swaddled, he still constantly attempts to squirm his way out of it when he is in the middle of his sleep. While we constantly try to honor this efforts and not swaddle him, ultimately, he can't really sleep without it yet.

Oftentimes, he squirms his hands up and out and then wakes up once they are free, it's the most common act that wakes him. But recently, he has done some crazy 'Houdini' like moves in an attempt to break free. I once found him pretty worked up, and when I opened up his loosened swaddled, this is what I found:
He had worked his legs so furiously in his nightgown, he pulled the neckline down all the way to his belly button!
Recently, we've been placing Hudson on a sleeping wedge. Because of the angle, he's been using a wiggle method down the wedge in an attempt to break free. Twice now, I've found him in this exact position below, and it was so hilarious I had to photograph him in the middle of the night!
I call this his 'babushka' look
